Homemade Fabric Softener! Money Saving & Super Easy!!!

One of the things I hate buying when it comes to doing laundry is fabric softener! There are so many articles of clothing (including most children's clothing, ESPECIALLY PAJAMAS) that you aren't suppose to use fabric softener on. On top of that, fabric softener isn't the cheapest laundry item, especially if you want a great smelling one. I have been researching a lot of ways to make fabric softener and I have found some recipes that I hope you'll find useful and money saving!

RECIPE #1 ~ Makes one gallon

Ingredients

  • 2 cups hair conditioner
  • # cups distilled white vinegar
  • 6 cups boiling water
  • 1 mixing utensil
  • Bucket/Pail/ Pot (that can hold a gallon)
  • empty bottle to store it (can be an old bleach or fabric softener bottle)
Directions
  1. Pour water into pail/bucket/pot
  2. Add conditioner
  3. Add vinegar
  4. Stir

RECIPE #2 ~ Makes a gallon

Ingredients
  • 1 gallon distilled white vinegar
  • 20-30 drops of essential oils
  • bottle for storage
* Lavendar scent - soothing, relaxing
* Citrus scent - energizing, uplifting
** Essential oils also provide antibacterial/antifungal properties

RECIPE #3

Ingredients
  • 3 cups HOT water
  • 1 1/2 cups vinegar
  • 1 cup conditioner
  • Essential oils

~ The hotter the water the better it is at dissolving the conditioner
~ You don't need expensive hair conditioner. Dollar store brands are fine!
~ When mixing hair conditioner and water don't shake it. Shaking it will cause the mixture to foam
~ These recipes work great for making your own REUSABLE DRYER SHEETS!
  • Dip washcloth or other fabric cut into squares in the softener
  • Ring out fabric and allow to dry
  • Once completely dry, toss in the dryer with a load
  • You can also add some essential oils (one or two drops) to a damp wash cloth and throw it in the dryer with a  load
~ Vinegar helps eliminate STATIC CLING! You can also use a ball of aluminum foil!
~ For all recipes:
  • Use 1/2 cup of homemade fabric softener in small loads
  • Use 1 cup for larger loads

  7. In recipe #1 how many cups of vinegar? I'm assuming 8 since there are 16 cups in 1 gallon..6 cups of water + 2 cups of conditioner makes 8 cups?
